DIVERSITY IN THE SPORTS MEDIA – A EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE

In the latest edition of BCOMS Question Time series, Nigel Wallace spoke to Dr Jacco van Sterkenburg about diversity in the sports media. He has been researching race, ethnicity and gender in football with an internationally comparative perspective for the last two years. His field of study also examines cultural racism and lack of diversity in football management as well as in society at large.

Dr van Sterkenburg is now an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media & Communication at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. After studying for a master’s degree in Psychology, he obtained a PhD from his dissertation, which dealt with how race, ethnicity and gender are represented in sport. Following that, he began exploring how audiences construct ideas about race, ethnicity, gender, ability and disability from coverage of sport in the media.
