In the aftermath of this momentous occasion, questions need to be asked about why it has taken so long, and what can be done to pave the way for Muslim players to play for the team in future.
With 3.9 Muslims in the UK, there are many young ballers who play across English football tiers. In order to be able to have the opportunity to play for England, players need supportive, progressive and inclusive environments to thrive. Muslims don’t drink alcohol, observe 5 daily prayers, eat halal food, observe fasting in Ramadhan and dress modestly (for example, covering just below the knee for men, and women covering the whole body except face and hands). With education and simple considerations fellow players and staff can enact considerations that make Muslim players feel included without having to compromise their faith. Unfortunately without such facilitations, Muslim players find themselves benched during Ramadhan, excluded from social gatherings where alcohol is a core component, and struggling to fulfil the obligation of prayer without appropriate facilities and breaks.
Many Muslims are from the diaspora, and have the option to represent multiple nations. Players may opt to play for their countries of origin, a trend that seems to be growing. With England currently experiencing increasing political polarisation and perpetuation of racist and Islamophobic rhetoric, Muslims are feeling wary about whether they are truly welcome here. England also has a hand in many international conflicts, with many British people at odds with the actions of their country abroad. If a Muslim player and their family is conflicted about the actions of this nation, they will understandably be hesitant about representing them on the world stage.
Djed Spence has made history. He has become the representation that many young aspiring Muslim ballers can relate to. Now they can aspire to be what they see. The dream has been planted, and hopefully the football infrastructure can support them so it isn’t long before Spence is one of many Muslim players in the England squad.
