Discovering BCOMS
Grant first noticed BCOMS on social media. He saw people he knew, or knew of, making significant strides in the sports media world, which caught his attention.

“I saw a lot of people I knew doing some really cool things in the sports industry, and that made me take notice.”

At the time, Grant was working as a maths teacher before transitioning into the charity sector as a content creator. Though he had already made progress through his personal connections and efforts, he wanted to expand his network and access the kind of opportunities he had seen others gain through BCOMS.

Gaining Access and Opportunity
When Grant joined BCOMS, he immediately felt the impact of the programme’s support and opportunities.

“It gave me opportunity, which I can never be more thankful for. A lot of the places that I had always dreamed of working in, BCOMS allowed me to be myself in those spaces and do what I knew I did best.”

Beyond opportunities, BCOMS introduced him to a network of peers who became a source of inspiration and support.

“The cohort I was a part of is full of extremely talented people. I now have a whole network of photographers, videographers, presenters, and producers that I know I can rely on for various projects.”

Learning the Industry
The programme’s masterclasses played a crucial role in Grant’s development, exposing him to the intricacies of the sports media landscape and helping him identify how he could carve out his own path.

“The masterclasses opened my eyes to the intricacies of the sports industry and how I could make my mark in different areas.”

Some of the initial opportunities BCOMS provided Grant led to further work, allowing him to prove himself and build a strong reputation.

“Some of the opportunities that BCOMS initially helped set up for me have led to further work based on how well it went the first time. It really has been a case of BCOMS giving you the baton and letting you run with it.”

The Importance of BCOMS
For Grant, the work that BCOMS does is essential in helping underrepresented voices break into the industry.

“There are so many people from underrepresented backgrounds doing the right things and putting in the work. They just need someone to believe in them. Once you’re on the BCOMS programme, you can be sure that they believe in you and are going to push you to do great things.”

BCOMS is actively working to diversify the sports media industry, ensuring that young people from different backgrounds can contribute and thrive.

“They are helping to diversify spaces that need the influence of young people from different walks of life.”

Advice from Grant Igbokwe
Having gone through his own journey, Grant shares an important lesson for others looking to break into sports media.

“Imposter syndrome is the biggest myth you’re ever going to encounter. Whatever space you’re in, you deserve to be there, so carry yourself as such.”

Take the First Step with BCOMS
Grant’s story is a testament to the power of opportunity, mentorship, and community. If you are passionate about sports media and looking for a way in, BCOMS can provide the support, access, and confidence you need to succeed.
