Senior Journalist (Online) @ BBC Sport

Job Introduction:

BBC Sport online is at the heart of the world’s major sporting events, whether it be the World Cup, Olympics, Premier League, Six Nations, international cricket, Wimbledon or The Open. Every day the BBC’s teams deliver breaking sport stories of the highest quality as well as providing world-class live coverage of the events themselves.

Production desk sub editors are the gatekeepers of that content, ensuring it is fair, accurate and engaging to the BBC’s audience while upholding the BBC’s core values and standards.

Contract type: Permanent – Full-time

Location: Media City, Salford, United Kingdom

Role Responsibility:

Sub editors on the production desk, also known as Senior Journalists, are expected to do the following:

  • Sub content, whether it be text, video, data or live sport and manage indexes
  • Work quickly and effectively in a breaking news environment
  • Use data analytics to ensure the website showcases its array and depth of content to attract a new, diverse audience
  • Take control of the Sport Interactive front page across all digital platforms, using editorial judgement and flair
  • Make editorial decisions quickly and confidently with the ability to respond calmly and positively to changing events and circumstances
  • Deputise for editors, manage and mentor journalists and take an editorial lead
  • Provide structured feedback and act as a line manager when required
  • Ensure all published content is of the highest journalistic standards; it is accurate, fair and impartial and adheres to the BBC’s editorial guidelines
  • Work as part of a team and liaise effectively with other areas of BBC Sport.
  • Work variable shift patterns and weekends

Are you the right candidate?

The BBC need experienced senior journalists, particularly those who have worked as sub editors in the newspaper industry or online, to comply and manage the BBC’s large portfolio of content to the highest editorial and legal standards.

A consistency of approach, thorough knowledge of platforms and understanding of on-demand media is vital, as well as being able to work under pressure.

Proven editorial judgement and flair in a newsroom – where pictures, graphics, social media, video and stats are just as important as the written word – should be married with considerable experience in journalism, preferably at a national level.
