THE D WORD 4 IS BACK!

INDUSTRY LEADERS TO COME TOGETHER TO HELP DRIVE

DIVERSITY IN THE SPORTS MEDIA

BCOMS come together with News UK to host the D Word 4 conference on 5th July

Senior leaders in the sports media will come together for BCOMS highly acclaimed conference on diversity in the sports media – the D Word 4. The event is supported by News UK and will be hosted at their headquarters in London on the 5th July.

The aim of the conference is to put diversity firmly on the agenda for the industry’s key decision makers and to review what progress has been made in this area following the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020.

Senior executives across the sports media, academics, diversity experts, experienced media professionals and young journalists will make up the audience attending on the day. The event will also be live streamed across BCOMS and News UK channels to ensure the important discussions will be accessible to all.

New research into the diversity of the sports media industry will be shared as part of the conference. At the last D Word event held in 2018, BCOMS shared research into 338 roles across broadcast and the written media covering major sporting events that year.

Key findings from this researched included;

–   Just 1 Black sports writer went to the FIFA World Cup in 2018 from the 63 sent across the national newspapers.

–   Only 5 of the 338 roles were given to Black journalists without a professional sports background.

–   No Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic females were found across the 109 roles in the national newspapers covering the major sports events BCOMS researched.

The D Word 4 event is part of an ongoing partnership between BCOMS and News UK who have been working together to help accelerate increasing diversity in sports media.

Leon Mann MBE, BCOMS founder, said;

“The D Word conference is a much needed event in the sports media bringing together leaders from across the industry to review our collective mission of increasing diversity, while also sharing good practice and new ideas to shift the dial.

“BCOMS are delighted to be delivering the D Word 4 with News UK. The conference is part of a wider partnership where we have been working together to accelerate positive change in the sports media.”
