Arsenal Host First London Masterclass Of The Year

The first London Masterclass of 2023 was held at the Emirates Stadium.

The first London Masterclass of the year took place at the Emirates Stadium and was hosted by BCOMS alumni, Brian Matovu, who is the Club Link Officer and Academy Match Reporter for Arsenal FC.

Before taking in the breathtaking 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium and going on a guided tour through the tunnel, the masterclass began with a Q&A session with the Arsenal media staff.

The BCOMS group were given a task to create and present to the Arsenal media team a week long content plan for the Premier League game with Manchester United.

Arsenal’s media staff who supported our event included, Georgia Chandler (Planning and Production Manager), David Frimpton (Host and Social Editor), Reece Bedford (Media and Communications Officer) and William Open (Internal Communications Manager).

The Q&A session began with Arsenal staff explaining their respective roles within Arsenal as well as their career path and how they got their roles at Arsenal.

The cohort asked the staff questions like « What are your day to day tasks? », « How does your job change when the team is not performing well compared to when it is? » and « how does working with the academy team differentiate from the first team? »

Following the Q&A session the cohort were tasked with coming up with a content creation plan ahead of what was a vital week for Arsenal. After beating their North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal would then face Manchester United to try and cement their place at the top of the Premier League table. The cohort split up in groups of 5 in order to come up with a social media plan for different platforms with the guidance of the social media staff.

The different groups, were then able to present to the rest of the group in the press conference room. Some of the ideas generated included goal highlights on from previous matches on Tok Tok, best moments from a specific player on Instagram or Youtube, and using match day programs.  Each group then received feedback from the staff about the ideas they came up with and how they can improve their ideas.

When the groups finished presenting, they got a tour of the stadium by going through the tunnel and out onto pitch. The class then headed to the first team changing room to see the amazing facilities including the brand new ice bath.

To end the day the group finished by networking and exchanging contacts with Arsenal staff.

Thank you to Arsenal FC, Arsenal in the community and the Arsenal staff for hosting such an insightful masterclass.
