The Department

As part of The Walt Disney Company since 1995, ESPN has been in the United Kingdom since 2001. We have continued to grow our brand presence since 2008 and have become an important brand within the minds of sports fans and in the wider Disney Organisation. As a leader in multimedia sports entertainment with over 50 business assets, we televise 65 sports in more than a dozen languages on all seven continents.

The Role

The Associate Editor is responsible for the content creation and drive of editorial coverage of ESPN.co.uk and the Universal News Group, as specified by the Senior Editor and News & Content Lead, as well as the management and upkeep of the ESPN.co.uk front page and sport-by-sport indices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Daily operation of the ESPN.co.uk site, including writing & sourcing of material, content amplification, headline-writing, photo management, uploading of content and maintenance of blogs, fantasy, social media and other ancillary products
  • Driving the creation and production of text, video and social material across platforms – particularly around our news coverage, as part of the Global Universal News Group
  • Driving content ideas around an always-on, developing sports agenda
  • Content and organisational planning
  • Identifying trends & analysing traffic to further content and amplification models
  • In the absence of the Senior Editor and Area Leads, taking the lead on news, features and content production, as well as liaising with writers. Handling special projects or packages of content
  • Maintaining a detailed knowledge of the world of sport, especially those not covered by other EMEA sites, which would be expected to include a good grasp of current affairs
  • Management of live events

About You

Suitable candidates will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Must have an excellent knowledge of domestic and international sport, and the ability to use existing technology and adapt to future changes
  • Should have a journalistic qualification and/or experience of working on a digital offering
  • An ability to write accurately and coherently under pressure
  • An ability to identify and amplify quality content, showing off the very best of ESPN across all platforms
  • An ability to write standout headlines
  • An ability to ‘sell’ content utilising a variety of new and existing platforms and methods
  • Attention to detail and an ability to embrace new technologies
  • A passion for sport
  • An ability to discuss and write about sport
