BCOMS launches new Masterclass Accelerator Programme with support from Apple

The new programme aims to increase opportunity and diverse leadership representation in the media industry

BCOMS is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with Apple focused on diversifying the landscape of leadership within the media industry. The game-changing new Masterclass Accelerator Programme launching this month will support the development of diverse content creators by equipping participants with the skills, network exposure and experiences to propel them to senior roles in the media industry. The programme will also connect participants with potential opportunities at Apple, as they work with the company’s recruitment team for practical tips on CVs, awareness of suitable roles and access to networking events.

Through this innovative partnership, the aim is to reduce the barriers for underrepresented talent to progress into roles that will enable them to give voice, audience and influence in an industry that holds power to impact mindsets and behaviours. The programme is focused on accelerating careers, and targets those already working in the content creation and journalism space. Participants will access bespoke tutorials, masterclasses and workshops delivered by industry leaders including a masterclass delivered by Apple. They will develop advanced digital learning in key disciplines such as editorial, production and graphic design, and achieve academic qualifications through a dual apprenticeship in content creation with AI and digital marketing with AI. Alongside the Masterclass Accelerator Programme, BCOMS’s partnership with Apple includes scholarship funding for industry-specific qualifications to support professional development.

This programme has been launched to address the lack of diversity within journalism. According to research by the National Council for Training in Journalism Report in May 2023, 87% of journalists come from white ethnic groups. Six percent of editors are ethnically diverse, with only 7% of editors aged below 30. In the UK, 80% of journalists were also found to have a parent in one of the three highest occupational groups, compared to only 2% in the lowest two occupational groups.

Leon Mann MBE, founder of BCOMS, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Apple — a company that shares BCOMS values and belief that diverse workforces and leadership will positively impact business performance. This programme will help to drive change in our industries by supporting the emergence of leaders who will shape a more inclusive and representative future.”

Mari-Anne Chiromo, EMEA I&D Partnerships lead at Apple said: “There is so much power in storytelling. With the depth and breadth of content across multiple platforms and media, it’s critically important that we ensure that those deciding which stories are told, how they’re told and who is able to tell them, are equitably representative of the audiences consuming them”.

Data drawn from five years of BCOMS programme delivery shows 50% conversion of BCOMS alumni into paid employment in content creation roles. These creators are now flourishing, ranging from those working on air with major broadcasters such as the BBC; and executives in sectors such as media co-ordination and fan engagement with Premier League clubs such as Arsenal.
