Communications Officer (England, St George’s Park, FA Education)

Our Organisation:

The Football Association (The FA) is the governing body of football in England. We are responsible for promoting and developing the game at all levels; from grass roots through to the professional game, The FA Cup and the England International teams, and has two core assets: Wembley Stadium and St George’s Park.

Overview of the role:

Supporting the England men’s and women’s leads, this role is responsible for the execution of the communications plans for development teams (U15 to U21), associated philosophy, FA Education and St. George’s Park. The role will require some travel with England development teams and requires regular engagement with the media. Based at St. George’s Park the role carries junior spokesperson responsibilities as appropriate.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for supporting the comms leads on England development teams and provide strategic direction to deliver a communications plan for development teams and events. Act as a spokesperson for development teams when appropriate.
  • Co-ordination of resource across all England development teams ensuring consistency of delivery in relation to press office and editorial support for teams.
  • Develop working relationships and maintain trust of all head coaches, staff and players advising on media matters
  • Educate players/key staff on social media and coordinate wider media training as appropriate
  • Enhance relationships with clubs relating to individual players’ promotion and profile, generating content for club and FA platforms, and co-ordinate and ensure FA content team cover all activities for all England men’s development team squads
  • Responsibility for the proactive co-ordination of all St. George’s Park and FA Education media announcements, in conjunction with key internal and external stakeholders
  • To work strategically with the SGP Marketing Manager taking a proactive approach in raising the profile of SGP as a destination through planning, co-ordinating and delivering an annual communications plan which will feed into the overall SGP business plan.
  • To provide a positive contribution towards achieving our objective of leading and shaping St George’s Park as a world class training facility working closely with key operating partners on site including Hilton Hotels.
  • To lead a proactive approach in raising the profile of FA Education through planning, co-ordinating and delivering an annual communications plan.
  • Provide regular out-of-hours media support to ensure FA is available and accountable at all times, managing reactive media enquiries regarding SGP staff, playing staff and coaches outside of squad time.
  • Manage final tournament press and PR activity for development teams when required, delivering UEFA/FIFA media obligations, including media guides and associated materials as produced – as appropriate – for all England development teams at tournaments

What we are looking for:

  • Media contacts book
  • Experience of dealing with national media
  • Experience of co-ordinating and managing PR campaigns
  • Experience of managing senior executives and talent (i.e. team managers, coaches, players etc.)
  • Experience of managing and operating within a multiple stakeholder environment
  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Excellent verbal and non-verbal communications skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Able to travel regularly (UK/Overseas)
  • Relevant (specialism e.g. Communications) experience  or PR/Media qualification/degree
  • Excellent knowledge of football and its structures at all levels
