Newsquest South West: Trainee Sports Reporter


An opportunity has arisen at the County Gazette in Taunton with Newsquest South West for a highly motivated, flexible, enthusiastic and hard-working trainee sports reporter work from its offices in Taunton.

Reporting to the editor, the ideal candidate will be a NCTJ qualified with knowledge and experience of reporting on a wide variety of sports and be able to write and sub submitted copy to a high standard.

Newsquest is a multi-media organisation with a web-first policy and the successful candidate will be confident writing about all sports, both in print and on-line, and have a good understanding of social media.

They will be expected to upload news stories on a daily basis as well as maintaining their own Twitter accounts and contributing to the Packet’s Facebook page.

They will also be expected to be able to handle a camera and film short videos for the web and have a clean driving licence.

This role involves some weekend work and some long hours but there will also be plenty of opportunities to enjoy living in Somerset.

Duties:

  • Writing sports reports.
  • Subbing submitted copy and press releases.
  • Allocating and placing stories on page using pre-set templates.
  • Choosing the back page splash.
  • Taking pictures and videos.
  • Covering sporting events.
  • Carrying out interviews.
  • Uploading to the website.
  • Updating social media (Twitter and Facebook).
  • Working weekends as and when required.

Skills & Qualifications: NCTJ qualified

Up to £16,000 depending on experience
