Trinity Mirror plc is seeking to recruit a trainee sports reporter to join our regional team at the Burton Mail. This role really is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring reporter to work alongside established journalists and become a fundamental part of the sports team. The successful applicant will join the team covering Burton Albion following the club’s meteoric rise to the Championship; so this is certainly an exciting and unique time to join the Burton Mail.

Role Responsibility:

  • In order to succeed in this role you will:
  • Be able to demonstrate experience of working as a trainee reporter in a weekly or daily newspaper
  • Be a brilliant writer who understands how sports fans follow their teams across all digital platforms
  • Be a skilled and enthusiastic user of social media
  • Have a good knowledge of live reporting and creating live digital content
  • Possess excellent communication skills and be adept at imparting information clearly and concisely, over any medium
  • Have the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Hold NCTJ prelim examinations – However this is a desirable criteria and not essential

The Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about developing new ways of telling sports stories to attract and engage our vast and knowledgeable digital audiences. We want you to bring fresh and creative ideas to the table and be passionate and enthusiastic in your approach. Suitable candidates will acknowledge that this is not a 9-5 role and will be able and willing to work flexibly over evenings/weekends as and when required.
